Glowing Roots Grimoire — Creative Research and Experimentation
Introduction
My grimoires are not created as finished art objects from the outset. They are working books that grow through research, experimentation, and use, and are completed over time.
They are not intended as spiritual manuals for rituals or spells per se. I use the word ‘grimoire’ in a personal, interspiritual way — as a poetic container for creative practice and research — while honoring that the term carries different meanings in other contexts and traditions.
Originally intended as: a sketchbook for life drawing and observation

From categorization to coherence
For many years, I struggled with categorizing my creative work. I kept separate sketchbooks, art journals, glue books, research notebooks, color studies, and technique experiments. Each book had a purpose, a rule, a label. In theory, this structure was meant to help me focus.
In practice, it did the opposite.
I would move from one interest to another — from mythology to color, from drawing to collage, from observation to imagination — and each shift seemed to require a new book. The result was a growing collection of half-filled notebooks and a persistent sense of fragmentation. I was always beginning, rarely completing, and constantly questioning where something truly belonged.
Over time, I realized that the problem was not a lack of discipline, but a mismatch between rigid systems and how my mind naturally works.

The freedom to experiment and research
My creative process is exploratory by nature. I research, experiment, follow questions, abandon them for a while, and return later with new insight. I jump between subjects, techniques, images, and ideas. This is not chaos — it is how curiosity unfolds for me.
Once I stopped trying to force my work into fixed categories, a different structure emerged. Instead of separating everything, I began gathering it.
Drawing, collage, writing, symbolism, color tests, notes, references, observations, and failed experiments all started to coexist within a single book. That book became what I now call a grimoire.
In this sense, the grimoire is not about mastery or control. It is a space where experimentation is allowed, where research can remain visible, and where unfinished thoughts are not a problem but a record of thinking-in-motion.

The mad professor and the eternal student
I sometimes think of my grimoire practice as that of a gentle mad professor — someone who cannot stay with one subject long enough to exhaust it, because the world keeps offering new questions.
I am also, very deliberately, an eternal student.
The grimoire allows me to move freely between disciplines and interests without needing to dedicate one book to one theme. A single grimoire may contain mythological notes beside a color experiment, a careful observation next to a playful collage, a serious question followed by a moment of wonder.
Nothing needs to be resolved immediately. The grimoire holds contradictions, detours, and returns.

Completion without pressure
Although my grimoires begin as working books, they are meant to be completed.
Each one starts with a provisional or working title. Only after the book has reached its natural conclusion does it receive its permanent name and subtitle. This moment marks not perfection, but coherence — the point at which the grimoire reveals its own inner logic and personality.
I refer to these books collectively as my Glowing Roots Grimoires.

A record of becoming
More than anything, my grimoires are records of becoming.
They document how ideas grow, how questions change, how research feeds imagination, and how making by hand leads to understanding that cannot always be planned or explained. They are neither purely private nor created for immediate display. They exist in the space between process and form.
By gathering my work into grimoires, I no longer need to choose between intuition and structure, or between research and play. The grimoire holds both — quietly, patiently, and over time.

Introductie
Mijn grimoires worden niet vanaf het begin gecreëerd als afgewerkte kunstobjecten. Het zijn werkboeken die groeien door onderzoek, experiment en gebruik, en die zich in de loop van de tijd voltooien.
Ze zijn niet bedoeld als spirituele handleidingen voor rituelen of spreuken per se. Ik gebruik het woord grimoire op een persoonlijke, interspirituele manier — als een poëtische drager voor creatieve praktijk en onderzoek — met respect voor het feit dat de term in andere contexten en tradities verschillende betekenissen draagt.

Van categorisering naar samenhang
Jarenlang worstelde ik met het categoriseren van mijn creatieve werk. Ik hield aparte schetsboeken, art journals, glue books, onderzoeksnotitieboeken, kleurstudies en techniekexperimenten bij. Elk boek had een doel, een regel, een label. In theorie was deze structuur bedoeld om mij te helpen focussen.
In de praktijk gebeurde het tegenovergestelde.
Ik sprong van het ene interessegebied naar het andere — van mythologie naar kleur, van tekenen naar collage, van observatie naar verbeelding — en elke verschuiving leek een nieuw boek te vereisen. Het resultaat was een groeiende verzameling halfgevulde notitieboeken en een hardnekkig gevoel van fragmentatie. Ik was voortdurend aan het beginnen, zelden aan het afronden, en steeds opnieuw aan het twijfelen waar iets nu werkelijk thuishoorde.
Gaandeweg besefte ik dat het probleem geen gebrek aan discipline was, maar een mismatch tussen rigide systemen en de manier waarop mijn geest van nature werkt.

De vrijheid om te experimenteren en te onderzoeken
Mijn creatieve proces is van nature onderzoekend. Ik bestudeer, experimenteer, volg vragen, laat ze tijdelijk los en keer later terug met nieuw inzicht. Ik beweeg tussen onderwerpen, technieken, beelden en ideeën. Dat is geen chaos — zo ontvouwt nieuwsgierigheid zich voor mij.
Toen ik stopte met mijn werk in vaste categorieën te willen dwingen, ontstond er een andere structuur. In plaats van alles te scheiden, begon ik het samen te brengen.
Tekenen, collage, schrijven, symboliek, kleurtesten, notities, referenties, observaties en mislukte experimenten begonnen naast elkaar te bestaan binnen één enkel boek. Dat boek werd wat ik nu een grimoire noem.
In die zin draait de grimoire niet om beheersing of controle. Het is een ruimte waar experiment mag bestaan, waar onderzoek zichtbaar mag blijven en waar onafgemaakte gedachten geen probleem vormen, maar een spoor van denken-in-beweging.

De mad professor en de eeuwige student
Soms zie ik mijn grimoire-praktijk als die van een zachte mad professor — iemand die niet lang genoeg bij één onderwerp kan blijven om het volledig uit te putten, omdat de wereld voortdurend nieuwe vragen aandient.
Ik ben ook, heel bewust, een eeuwige student.
De grimoire stelt mij in staat vrij te bewegen tussen disciplines en interesses zonder één boek aan één thema te moeten wijden. Eén enkele grimoire kan mythologische notities bevatten naast een kleurstudie, een zorgvuldige observatie naast een speelse collage, een ernstige vraag gevolgd door een moment van verwondering.
Niets hoeft onmiddellijk opgelost te worden. De grimoire houdt tegenstrijdigheden, omwegen en terugkeren vast.

Voltooiing zonder druk
Hoewel mijn grimoires beginnen als werkboeken, zijn ze bedoeld om voltooid te worden.
Elk boek start met een voorlopige of werktitel. Pas wanneer het zijn natuurlijke einde heeft bereikt, krijgt het zijn definitieve naam en ondertitel. Dat moment markeert geen perfectie, maar samenhang — het punt waarop de grimoire zijn eigen innerlijke logica en persoonlijkheid onthult.
Samen noem ik deze boeken mijn Glowing Roots Grimoires.

Een verslag van wording
Bovenal zijn mijn grimoires verslagen van wording.
Ze documenteren hoe ideeën groeien, hoe vragen veranderen, hoe onderzoek de verbeelding voedt en hoe werken met de handen leidt tot inzichten die niet altijd gepland of verklaard kunnen worden. Ze zijn noch puur privé, noch bedoeld voor onmiddellijke presentatie. Ze bestaan in de ruimte tussen proces en vorm.
Door mijn werk te verzamelen in grimoires hoef ik niet langer te kiezen tussen intuïtie en structuur, of tussen onderzoek en spel. De grimoire draagt beide — stil, geduldig en door de tijd heen.

Introduction
Mes grimoires ne sont pas conçus dès le départ comme des œuvres d’art finies. Ce sont des livres de travail qui grandissent à travers la recherche, l’expérimentation et l’usage, et qui se complètent avec le temps.
Ils ne sont pas destinés, per se, à être des manuels spirituels de rituels ou de sorts. J’utilise le mot grimoire de manière personnelle et interspirituelle — comme un contenant poétique pour la pratique créative et la recherche — tout en respectant le fait que ce terme porte des significations différentes selon les contextes et les traditions.

De la catégorisation à la cohérence
Pendant de nombreuses années, j’ai lutté pour catégoriser mon travail créatif. Je tenais des carnets séparés : carnets de croquis, art journals, glue books, cahiers de recherche, études de couleurs, expérimentations techniques. Chaque livre avait une fonction, une règle, une étiquette. En théorie, cette structure devait m’aider à me concentrer.
En pratique, c’est l’inverse qui s’est produit.
Je passais d’un centre d’intérêt à l’autre — de la mythologie à la couleur, du dessin au collage, de l’observation à l’imagination — et chaque déplacement semblait exiger un nouveau carnet. Le résultat fut une collection croissante de livres à moitié remplis et un sentiment persistant de fragmentation. Je commençais sans cesse, finissais rarement, et doutais constamment de l’endroit où chaque chose devait réellement trouver sa place.
Avec le temps, j’ai compris que le problème n’était pas un manque de discipline, mais une inadéquation entre des systèmes rigides et la manière dont mon esprit fonctionne naturellement.

La liberté d’expérimenter et de rechercher
Mon processus créatif est, par nature, exploratoire. J’étudie, j’expérimente, je suis des questions, je les laisse parfois en suspens, puis j’y reviens plus tard avec un regard neuf. Je me déplace entre sujets, techniques, images et idées. Ce n’est pas du chaos — c’est ainsi que la curiosité se déploie pour moi.
Lorsque j’ai cessé de vouloir forcer mon travail dans des catégories fixes, une autre forme de structure est apparue. Au lieu de tout séparer, j’ai commencé à rassembler.
Dessin, collage, écriture, symbolique, essais de couleurs, notes, références, observations et expérimentations inabouties ont commencé à coexister dans un même livre. Ce livre est devenu ce que j’appelle aujourd’hui un grimoire.
Dans ce sens, le grimoire ne relève pas de la maîtrise ou du contrôle. C’est un espace où l’expérimentation est permise, où la recherche peut rester visible, et où les pensées inachevées ne sont pas un défaut, mais la trace d’une pensée en mouvement.

Le professeur fou et l’étudiante éternelle
Par moments, je perçois ma pratique du grimoire comme celle d’un doux mad professor — quelqu’un qui ne peut rester assez longtemps sur un seul sujet pour l’épuiser entièrement, tant le monde propose sans cesse de nouvelles questions.
Je suis aussi, très consciemment, une étudiante éternelle.
Le grimoire me permet de circuler librement entre disciplines et centres d’intérêt, sans devoir consacrer un livre entier à un seul thème. Un même grimoire peut contenir des notes mythologiques à côté d’une étude de couleur, une observation attentive voisine d’un collage ludique, une question sérieuse suivie d’un moment d’émerveillement.
Rien n’a besoin d’être résolu immédiatement. Le grimoire accueille les contradictions, les détours et les retours.

Achever sans pression
Bien que mes grimoires commencent comme des livres de travail, ils sont destinés à être achevés.
Chaque livre débute avec un titre provisoire ou de travail. Ce n’est qu’une fois arrivé à sa fin naturelle qu’il reçoit son nom définitif et son sous-titre. Ce moment ne marque pas la perfection, mais la cohérence — le point où le grimoire révèle sa logique interne et sa personnalité propre.
Ensemble, je nomme ces livres mes Glowing Roots Grimoires.

Un témoignage du devenir
Avant tout, mes grimoires sont des témoignages du devenir.
Ils documentent la manière dont les idées grandissent, dont les questions se transforment, comment la recherche nourrit l’imagination, et comment le travail des mains mène à des compréhensions qui ne sont pas toujours planifiées ni explicables. Ils ne sont ni purement privés, ni destinés à une présentation immédiate. Ils existent dans l’espace entre le processus et la forme.
En rassemblant mon travail dans des grimoires, je n’ai plus à choisir entre intuition et structure, ni entre recherche et jeu. Le grimoire accueille les deux — silencieusement, patiemment, à travers le temps.
